Nothing lasts forever, including your home’s appliances. Fortunately, most home appliances last around 10 years, but it’s important to be able to plan for the purchase of a new one. Here’s a short guide to appliances and their lifespans.

1. Ovens

When it comes to the lifespans of your home appliances, the oven has one of the longest. Gas ranges can last 15 years, while electric ones last as long as 13 years. A range hood usually lasts around 14 years.

2. The Lifespan of a Refrigerator

Most fridges can be expected to last 13 years. Compact fridges may only last 9, though. As technology is always improving, you usually save more money in energy costs if you replace your older fridge before it actually dies.

3. Free-Standing Freezer

The freezer likely takes first place for the longest lifespans of your home appliances with a lifespan of up to 20 years. To increase the lifespan of your freezer, make sure it’s properly defrosted.

4. Microwaves Have the Lowest Lifespans of Your Home Appliances

Microwave ovens are the shortest-lived home appliance with a lifespan of only five to 10 years. To extend its lifespan, don’t use metal in the microwave, don’t run it empty, and keep it clean to avoid hotspots from food particles. Many microwaves have a filter on the underside; degrease the filter to help keep it running efficiently.

5. Dishwashing Appliances and Their Lifespans

Dishwashers are convenient and save a lot of time and money. Usually, dishwashers last an average of 9 years before they need to be replaced. Much like refrigerators, though, these appliances will often save you money if you upgrade sooner rather than later.

6. Washing Machine

Clothes washers typically have a lifespan of around 10 years. To increase the lifespan of your washing machine, only run it when you have a full load of clothes, check hoses regularly, and perform routine maintenance and cleaning.

7. Clothes Drying Appliances and Their Lifespans

Dryers tend to last a little bit longer than washers with an average lifespan of 13 years. Clean out your lint tray regularly to help your dryer run efficiently and last as long as possible.
