If you are preparing to move, you know you will need to get your hands on boxes and packing supplies, rent a moving truck, or hire a professional moving company. It can be hard to keep up with all the people and organizations you need to notify when you move. The sooner you inform these organizations, the better, so you don’t experience a lapse in service or miss important correspondence.

Organizations to Notify When You Move

If you aren’t sure where to start, check the list below for people and organizations to notify when you move.

USPS

You must complete a change of address form online or at your local Post Office to ensure your mail goes to your new address. Filling out the form takes a couple of minutes, and will forward mail from your old address to your new one for up to one year.

IRS

Contact the Internal Revenue Service to inform them of your address change. Update your information via phone call or by completing Form 8822. By updating your address with the IRS, you can rest easy knowing that your tax return, stimulus check, and important messages will be mailed to the correct house.

Notify Insurance Companies When You Move

Notify all insurance companies of your move beforehand. If you are moving to a new neighborhood, there is a chance that your rates will decrease (or increase). Failing to notify them of your move may result in your policy being voided.

Financial Institutions

Mail theft is one of the more common ways people have their identities stolen. Notify your bank and credit card companies to protect your sensitive financial information.

DMV

Most states require that you update your address with the DMV within 30 calendar days of your move. While at the DMV, you can update several documents with your new address, including your driver’s license, vehicle registration, passport, and voter registration.

Utilities

Change your address with your utility companies, so you don’t find yourself without water, electricity, and other essential services. You can likely transfer your utilities online, but some companies may require a phone call. If you’re moving out of state, you will need to cancel your current services and start new accounts in your new location.

Your Employer

Notify the HR department of your employer about your new address. It may not be a huge concern to you if your paychecks are direct deposited. However, you still want to receive retirement account statements, tax forms, and other important work-related documents.

Subscriptions to Notify When You Move

Notify all of your subscription services of your new address as soon as you move to ensure you continue to receive your packages at the new home. As a general rule, you can update these online.

This list of people to notify when you move will get you started. By doing this early, you can reduce some of your stress on moving day.
